Murton House is a great location for a holiday or short weekend break away, being ideally situated for exploring the Eden Valley, North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Teesdale and the Lake District National Park.
We're surrounded by beautiful open countryside, with nothing to disturb you other than sheep, birds and the odd infrequent walker. This is such an unspoiled, peaceful part of the country. Few places can match the beauty of the Eden Valley so where better to participate in exciting sports or gentle rural pursuits?
There are many superb walks right on the doorstep. High Cup Nick is a recognised classic with breathtaking views in all directions. Cross Fell, the highest mountain of the Pennines, dominates the skyline. The Pennine Way runs through Dufton, just 3 miles up the road from Murton. This picturesque village hosts our nearest pub, the Stag Inn, listed in the Camra Good Beer Guide and well known locally for the quality of their food.
Eden is the perfect location to try many sporting activities - pony trekking, sailing or canoeing. Cyclists are discovering Eden with its quiet country lanes and ever increasingly popular C2C cycle route.
Take time to discover Eden’s fascinating history - and discover the hidden treasures of this wonderful area. Visit heritage sites that include Neolithic stone circles, Bronze Age settlements, Roman forts, magnificent castles (such as Brougham Castle & Brough Castle), ancient churches, historic houses and beautiful gardens. Long Meg and her Daughters – the second largest stone circle in the country (only Stonehenge is bigger) is also nearby.
There are many cultural events throughout the year: music festivals, the world famous Appleby Horse Fair and country shows, the ever popular Potfest (pottery not potatoes) at Penrith, and Pots in the Park at Hutton Forest.
The great border city of Carlisle with its Castle, Cathedral and Tullie House Museum is within easy access.
If you wish to sit back and relax and watch the scenery drift by, then hop on board the picturesque Carlisle - Settle Railway, which stops at Appleby. Steam trains occasionally go along this line too.
Appleby Golf Course is literally down the road with stunning views to the Lake District and over to the Yorkshire Dales.
Teesdale is just the other side of the fells and is another beautiful part of the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty which is the North Pennines - visit High Force - the highest waterfall in England on the mighty River Tees - or Cow Green Reservoir with stunning views over the North Pennines.
And should the weather turn wet, why not investigate such local visitor attractions as Rheged, Wetheriggs Pottery Abbott Lodge Jersey Ice Cream or Greystoke Castle. Please visit the Cumbria Tourist Board website for more information.
